2026 Dubbed the Age of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Considering a gathering of frogs is called an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been anything but new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. But, their popularity has seemingly increased in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are bona fide titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a detailed review into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also apparent elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the explosion in gaming looks uniquely pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Honestly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and grappling abilities lend themselves to a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.

Several the featured titles directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year yet.

Should these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be entering a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
